Best Buy being a humongous consumer website, as a Digital Designer, I was responsible for re-designing the navbar in a concise form to make it easier for the user to navigate through it. Designed & updated all new (Black Friday, Christmas, Boxing Day & New Year's) deals banner in the festive season.
How might we smoothen the customer’s buying experience through our website during the holiday season?
I am looking to buy for the latest Apple Macbook that recently released. I want to check what new features does it have before I purchase it
The holiday season is almost here and I want to check all the great deals that the store is offering to buy gifts for me and my family
It is difficult for me to go through too many buttons and pages in the navigation bar to purchase one thing. It would be easier to search in a few steps
Began with focus groups online & had a discussion about ways to augment the customer’s buying experience.
We asked everyone to look through Best Buy’s website and mention what changes could we make in a more broader perspective and took notes of each feedback we received.
In order to narrow it down, we did an online questionnaire where we could get detailed answers to some specific questions. Later combining them together we were able to begin the brainstorming of ideas.
After the brainstorming, for the desk research we looked through the competitors websites in order to create a competitive analysis and highlighted the more important changes.
Discussing it with the management and based on the research we started to build up on the ideas.
Too much information exists and unorganized categories for the users in the navigation bar
Brand pages needs to be updated based on new products that are launched in the market
Getting to know about the upcoming deals in the holiday season and providing a good UI for the same
Using all the research results and materials, we started designing a wireframe to get an overview of the changes required in the navbar. Side by side I was also iterating the design of MTH banners and brand pages for making it more convenient for the users to browse through.
Designed a smooth and clean layout for the Navbar as it is one of the most used interaction on Best Buy's Website. Modifying Brands with letters in the drop down through on click showcase of each brand name in order to narrow it down. Also tapering the Shop option, by adding products into different categories (for instance : drones under the section of camera) which makes it easier for users to scroll through the navbar and search the things they are looking for. Having a separate section for deals that highlights the ongoing deals to the users. Services section consists of the services provided by Best Buy (for instance : Geek Squad service). Overall, narrowing down the navbar into categories helped in creating the user navigation efficient.
Designing iRobot's banner, offer blocks, and a clean and concise layout for highlighting each of its functions. We also added the shop now button with each of the header which makes the buying for the user easier rather than scrolling all the way to the bottom. We also used heavy fonts for the header and normal fonts for paragraph.
MTH (Make The Holidays) Banners (examples) are designed during the festive season for Christmas, Boxing Day and New Year to promote new and upcoming deals. In order to keep the design consistent with the rest of the website, we used similar colours along with snowflakes assets to relate to winter. Along with it we used gift boxes that has a Best Buy's tag on it that would showcase buying gifts for friends and family using the great Best Buy's deals.
The experience at Best Buy was remarkable. It gave me an opportunity to learn and dwell into the systems of real world work experience. Since I joined in fall, it is considered to be the busiest time start from fall until the end of winter due to the festivals and deals and because of it I was able to wear a lot of hats and get work done. Along with that, participating in discussions, learning about everyone’s design styles, thinking, etc gave me an understanding about the company’s diversity. I also learned Jira in order to manage the timeline, connect with the stakeholders for products, work individually as well as with the team, and most importantly I certainly gained more skills through that experience. Overall, it was one of the best experience at Best Buy.
